This week's reports
Tuesday, September 24. Phippsburg (Map 6) On Headwall Beach, behind Morse Mountain I saw a sanderling that only had one good leg, the other was dragging behind and slightly to the side. It would hop along at full tilt avoiding the waves and doing a good job of keeping up with the rest of the flock of 70 or so, although occasionally I saw it feeding by itself. A.G.
Thursday, September 26. Farmington (Maps 19/20) No frost here yet; 30 and 28 on the therm. the past 2 mornings. I am on a hill so frost hits me later than the gully folk. No frost there yet. They did have snow at Sugarloaf night before, but not yet open for skiing. S.M.
Thursday, September 26. Fort Kent (Map 67) The Fort Kent area had its first frost on Saturday night. It was not a killing frost, but it did singe the edges of the zuchinni plants. However, this morning, I looked outside at the bird bath and there was a skim of ice on the water. I got in the poor pickup that had spent the night outside and the windshield needed to be scraped. The folliage is turning fast. From Portage to Fort Kent, there is a lot of color. It is not extremely bright, but it is plentiful. D.R.
Friday, September 27. Milford (Map 19?) There was frost on the windshield of my car this morning, but nowhere else in the yard. (We're in a low spot where the fog usually collects.) T.C.
Saturday, September 28. Otis (Map 24) Observed "red" damselflies, in very quiet section of pond, coupled in pairs, one hitting a small bank (about 8" high) and then the pair rebounding, the latter hitting the water briefly with its ovipositer (?). There were at least a six pairs. B.G.
Sunday, September 29. Holden (Map 23) Observed five turkey vultures soaring over the hills on the Upper Dedham Road beyond Bald Mountain. B.G.
