This week's reports
Report format = Day, date, [time]. Location (Maine Atlas Map number) Report text. Initials of correspondent.
Thursday, October 30. Caratunk (Map 30) On Monday, the
27th, we had 3" of snow on the ground by 6:30 am. It snowed most of the day and about
5" fell. It settled to about 3" by nightfall. We rec'd another inch on Tuesday
a.m. And, Tues. night it flurried. There is still 1-2" on the ground here at Pleasant
Pond (1500' elevation). I hope it warms up a bit; I've put off digging up all of my
dahlias. A friend of mine skied at Sugarloaf on Wednesday (Spillway Trail only) and said
it was good. It snowed here on October 1, but it was gone by evening.
Monday night there were two deer in our driveway and last night I saw three on the front
yard of the game warden's house in Caratunk. We lost our cat early in September and the
neighbor's lost theirs in August. We suspect a fox who's been hanging around. B.Y.
Wednesday, October 29. Old Town (Map 33) An Oct. 29 survey
of a beaver flowage in Old Town found 4 cold, slow-moving Leopard Frogs, and copious otter
scat. I surmise that as the frogs go to hibernate, otters have an easy time catching them.
9-Spined Sticklebacks were caught in minnow traps in all 3 beaver flowages checked. J.K.M.
Saturday, November 1. Orrington/Holden (Map 23) Late
Amphibians: A large Green Frog hopped across the road at Maine Audubon's Fields Pond
Nature Center on Nov. 1, and a Spring Peeper was singing there, from up in a tree, on that
same date, which seems very late for amphibians.
A Cardinal visited the new bird feeders at the nature center Nov. 1, and fresh Moose
tracks were found there too, alongside the cedar boardwalk. J.K.M.
Sunday, November 2. Old Town (Map 33) I also saw a Fox in Old Town on Nov. 2. J.K.M.
Monday, November 3. Orono (Map 23) Further on the spiders on the Ferry Hill Bridge on Main Street in Orono. The Town has still not fastened "the boards" -- that act as a windscreen -- onto the railings on the West side of the bridge. Earlier I had said that web-building seemed to have ceased naturally around Oct. 17-18. Last night the temperature remained in the high 40's. This morning I saw that about 25 webs had been strung during the night. The combination of the still-open space and the warmer weather may have brought the spiders out of dormancy. F.W.
