This week's reports
Report format = Day, date, [time]. Location (Maine Atlas Map number) Report text. Initials of correspondent.
Tuesday, May 27, 9:00 am. Chamberlain (Map 7) Black fly severity = 3. Lots of bites to confirm it. First mosquitoes A.G.
Wednesday, May 28. Bridgton (Map 4) Pleasant Mountain. Black fly severity = 3 (severe). Lordy, they were vicious. C.R.
Wednesday, May 28. Gray (Map 5) (downtown) Black fly severity =2 (moderate). C.R.
Friday, May 30. (Maps 6 and 7) Arrowsic, Georgetown, and Wiscasset have seen an increase in black flies - still a #1, though. They don't really seem to be biting yet. I'm an old North Woods and Canadian canoeist, so my estimation of what is a #3 is based on some pretty outstanding conditions! I hope I'm not prejudicing your sample by being overly conservative! D.H.
Saturday, May 31. St. Albans (Map 31) A mile west of the North Road. I spent the last two hours planting trees shirtless in order to take a reading. It had to be a three out there. I was getting multiple kills in a single swat and a couple made it deep into my ears. The season is upon us. H.M.
Saturday, May 31. Bangor (Map 23) Black fly severity = 2. R.
Saturday, May 31. Milford (Map 33) Black Fly Report for Sunkhaze Stream, level 2 blackfllies noted. Moose seen on canoe trip too. J.K.M.
Sunday, June 1, 8:00 am. Alna (Map 7) Black fly severity = 3. A.G.
Sunday, June 1. Fort Kent (Map 67) Little Black Lake. Black fly rating: 1. First blackfly of season noted (in form of a single bite) evening May 31. With cooler weather no flies noticeable while working in garden June 1. E.T.
Monday, June 2. South Orrington (Map
23) Black fly report -- level 2 (moderate).
Many cedar waxwings in our budding apple trees.
A sun dog [cloud lighting phenomenon 22û to either side of Sun] was spotted near sunset
on June 1. L.S.
Monday, June 2. Stockholm (Map 68) Black fly update: Mon., May 26 : Scale #1. M.S.
Monday, June 2. St. Albans (Map 31)
I took a walk and saw that some of the apple blossoms are fully open and the rest are
about to be. I've seen a lot of wild strawberry flowers and the wild cherry trees seem to
be in full flower.
The big news here is that while I was working on my computer at 6:00 am today a bull moose
casually ambled across my lawn -- the first time that's happened that I noticed. My camera
was close at hand and I got 4 or 5 shots of it. He was huge enough to be somewhat
intimidating and came complete with velvet-covered rack. H.M.
Tuesday, June 3. Orono (Map 23) Wildflowers in bloom in fields and forest edges include: bluet, Canada mayflower (wild lily-of-the-valley), common blue violet, dandelion, pointed blue-eyed grass, and sweet white violet. F.W.
